Traditional all-wheel drive systems have been the backbone of powerful vehicles for years, but their high weight, mechanical complexity and high fuel consumption have highlighted the need for new solutions.
Toyota, as one of the pioneers of innovation in the automotive industry, has come up with an intelligent answer to this need. A system that, without a heavy drive shaft and permanent mechanical connection, still maintains the ability to pass slippery roads and long gradients. The technology, known as E-Four or Electronic Four-Wheel Drive, is based on combining the power of the main engine with an independent electric motor on the rear axle.

How the E-Four system works
Unlike traditional four-wheel drive systems that use a propeller shaft and mechanical differential to distribute power between the front and rear axles, the E-Four uses only wiring and electric motors for this purpose.
The front axle is driven by the car’s main engine (which can be gasoline, hybrid or all-electric), but the rear axle is completely independent and has a dedicated electric motor installed on it. When more traction is needed, for example on slippery roads, sharp bends or during rapid acceleration, the car’s intelligent control unit activates the rear motor and sends the necessary torque to the rear wheels.
The communication between the front and rear axles is established via software and electronic circuits, so there is no need for heavy mechanical connections and power transmission based on a propeller shaft.
